Hailey Howe - Multidisciplinary Artist

Through sculpture, performance and installation, Hailey Howe explores concepts of extorting the abject through the body, creating permanence within mortality and the fragility within gender roles and sexuality. In her practice, she utilizes a wide range of materials including metals, fibers, concrete, plaster and silicones. Howe pushes the manipulation of these materials to the absolute furthest point, pushing tension within the concepts of the works as well as the physicality.
Within her sculptural work, the body is often exaggerated and extorted to fit in themes of violence and vulnerability. This abstraction of the body speaks in the same language as the manipulation of material. Processes in the work carry a sense of both violence and care; ranging from forging, welding and dismantling as well as sanding, smoothing and staining. The balance between the two processes are very important in Howe’s work, as she strives to demonstrate the necessity of both masculinity and femininity through physicality.
Inspired heavily by surrealist and feminist art movements, her work pulls from genuine and raw expression. As she further intertwines performance and installation alongside the sculptures, the objects begin to take on a life of their own. The use of movement and space further the feeling sensitivity throughout the pieces; it allows the viewer to live through the art just as the objects do.
